Drishti- Sara Phillips MindBodyFocus
Happy January everyone.
My classes at OrangeYoga in January have focused on Drishti.
Drishti is a Sanskrit word that means vision or sight, observation or where we take our gaze.
When we are in a yoga class, it refers to the practice of choosing a specific point of focus for the eyes while carrying out the various asanas (yoga poses). It helps to keep focus rather than letting the mind be distracted by all that’s going on around.
Its intention is to give us a deeper level of concentration and draw our focus inward instead of outward.
So, for example in Warrior 2 we would look towards the middle finger of our front hand.
Or in meditation we could take our Drishti to our breath, or in eyes open meditation looking towards a certain focal point, this could be a candle flame or an apple.
I like to take the concept of Drishti off the mat and observe what it is that I am focusing on in life. There is a phrase that goes Energy Flows Where Attention Goes and I think Drishti means exactly that..
If we focus on something specific the energy that’s put into that makes it grow, if we focus on something and give it energy we see results. This could be positive or negative depending on what we are choosing to give our energy to. And we can change our focus and direct it for the positive. I consciously use Drishti most days to direct my focus, or family or friends. The minute that I make it a consciously thought I changes my focus and my energy is consciously or intentionally directed. Meaning I have shone the light on it and therefore giving it the opportunity to grow.
Can you see how you use Drishti be in in yoga practice or off the mat to make positive changes in your daily habits?
